Terrazzo Masters

The Higgins Hotel

Challenge Solved

Situated across the street from the National WWII Museum, the $47 million, 177,334 sq ft  Higgins Hotel transports you back in time to New Orleans during the war.  The hotel acts as an extension of the museum, including featuring some artifacts within the hotel. Terrazzo Masters was able to masterfully match the 1940s Art Deco inspired designs in the lobby and elevator lobby. Our skilled journeymen relied on their expertise to match the aerodynamic design, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation featured throughout the Higgins Hotel.

The Art Deco-inspired Higgins Hotel provides a glamorous backdrop for New Orleans residents and visitors. Featuring intricate, geometric designs, a grand chandelier, and a mural by celebrated Art Deco Artist Michael Kungl, the hotel needed luxurious floors to match. Inspired by WWII military uniforms, the Terrazzo design in the lobby features multiple chevron-shaped stripes representing the rank and service of the soldiers.

Our skilled journeymen installed the brass divider strip design utilizing 7 different Terrazzo colors. Some of these brass strip details and corners came pre-mounted to a mesh backing. Due to field adjustments to the layout by the designers, many of those had to be adapted and re-mitered on site. Additional brass was installed and the spaces were filled with different Terrazzo formulas to match. This wasn’t our only setback during the project. There was also a large water leak causing us to have to repolish and reseal a majority of the brass dividers. Even with these setbacks, Terrazzo Masters was able to deliver beautiful floors with decadent detail work matching the Art Deco and WWII design inspiration.
