The Lola by Sextant

Challenge Solved

The challenge was related to working in a 100 year old building and adjusting for settlement and differentiating elevations. Existing concrete at the stair had to be bush-hammered and then patched to provide the correct riser elevations. The existing brick surface at the ground floor entry level had to be corrected also. Existing concrete and brick wall surface had to be straightened and made plmb prior to installing the pre-cast Terrazzo wainscot panels.

Terrazzo Masters had never installed a Venetian size aggregate in an Epoxy resin based system. We utilized the great network of fellow NTMA contractors for specific information regarding mix design, placement, etc.

The brick warehouse at 1148 S. Peters St. was designed by New Orleans architect Emile Weil, who also designed the Saenger Theater, Touro Synagogue and the Whitney Bank building on St. Charles Avenue. It was built in 1921 and housed the Crane Company, a plumbing supply, and Coffee storage. A description and history of the building is attached. Also attached is a copy of the National Park Service Historic Preservation Certification Application amending the flooring to be Terrazzo, meeting the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

The Terrazzo flooring installation is a 800 sf hotel reception lobby, two-color pattern, black and cream. Polished to a 800 grit diamond and finished with a penetrating sealer. The distinct characteristic was the use of Venetian sized marble aggregate in an Epoxy Terrazzo system. All pre-cast Stair Treads, Risers and the surrounding wainscot wall panels were templeted on site and cast, ground and polished in our own shop.
