With a condensed construction schedule to open for the August 2017 school year, Terrazzo Masters accepted the challenge to create the floor of Arlene Meraux Elementary School. The designed installation for the “Home of the Bees’” would include the school’s colors and mascot logo. Climate control and slab reinforcement/preparation treatments were necessary throughout the entire structure before any terrazzo work could begin. Terrazzo was ordered throughout the facility to provide vibrant yet functional color-coding that would assist students and visitors with location identification and movement. Mobilizing several set-ups of installation, and multiple crews working through nights and weekends, Terrazzo Masters created a series of installations that embodied the energy and creativity of the school’s mascot: the Bee! Utilizing 25,000 square feet of plastic stencil sheets, over 800 water-jet cut aluminum intersections were placed and aligned with 12,000 feet of adjoining linear divider strips to complete the installation of intricate honeycomb patterns and water-jet cut bee logos in all the hallways of the school. The cafeteria became a welcoming hive with a vibrant, hand-bent sunflower pattern that would ensure each student and visitor felt at home in the gathering space. The eight color-themed patterns used in the installations were meticulously designed to match the motifs in the glazed concrete masonry walls. Coordinating with Gibb’s Construction, the Architects, and Owner representatives, in under five months, Terrazzo Masters successfully completed an animated large-scale terrazzo installation with an unwavering dedication to the families of St. Bernard Parish.
