LSU HSC School of Nursing 3rd Floor Atrium Lobby

Challenge Solved

LSU HSC is a 24 hour per day, 365 days a year operation. The project was divided into multiple phases to accomplish the installation around classes and students. Continuity of the pattern was developed around construction barricades as needed.

The LSU Bengal Tiger Stripe pattern was designed to approximate the pattern looking at the back of the school mascot. Mike the Tiger is the mascot of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and serves as the graphic image of LSU sports. The graphic drawing for the Terrazzo layout was first developed in 2015 and modified over a five yer period before being let out for bids. The layout was still being modified as we were installing it. Creative Edge furnished the templates used for field layout. All divider strips were bent in the field prior to being epoxy bonded to the substrate.

We were first brought in during the initial design stages to consult on the pattern. Once the preliminary drawings were produced, we were consulted regarding the Terrazzo color formulas. Multiple rounds of sample production resulted in the final colors. The project was put out for bid three times over a five year period before a selection was finally made and a contract agreed to. Eventually we were proud to have weathered the competitive bid process and would up with job.

The overall pallet with the Purple & Gold colors used in other finishes was complimentary to the muted tones in the terrazzo. This all carries the LSU theme throughout the entire atrium area.

The existing flooring had to be removed in sections and phases prior to the substrate being treated for cracks and flatness. 3/8″ epoxy terrazzo in 3 colors was installed over the 5,100 sf of flooring area. Italian Bianco Verona, Texas Black, Honey Glass and clear Glass were used as the aggregates. Precast straight terrazzo base was made to match the floor colors and finished in our shop prior to being installed in the field. Creative Edge Stencil Tek corrugated plastic templates were used to accomplish the flooring layout. The finish was specified by the owner. The flooring was brought up to a 3,000 grit polish and sealed with a penetrating impregnation stone sealer. It was then high-speed heat burnished.
